In 1983, when the ship-breaking industry was just beginning at Alang, Mr. Raj Bansal and Mr. Kapoor Bansal started their own ship-recycling company at Plot No. 40. With dedication and attention to detail, the business grew to new heights — and in 1991 was named Shirdi Steel Traders.
The ship-recycling industry in Alang, Gujarat, is one of the largest in the world. Spanning roughly 10 kilometres along the Gulf of Khambhat, its high tidal range and wide beach provide ideal conditions for grounding and dismantling large vessels — from bulk carriers and oil tankers to cruise ships and decommissioned naval vessels — recovering steel, aluminium and copper for reuse.
The industry recovers 1.5–2 million metric tonnes of steel annually — nearly 10% of India's steel requirement — and supports an ecosystem of around 25,000–30,000 workers. As the world and technology have evolved, so has Shirdi Steel Traders: today a green ship yard operating to the highest international standards.
